Columbus Day Flag Raising Set for Hamilton on Oct. 14

Trenton, N.J. — Italian Americans were appreciative that, in 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued a proclamation designating October 12 as Columbus Day. Columbus Day was added as a federal holiday by Congress in 1968, in a bill that changed several holidays’ observance to the nearest Monday. President Lyndon Johnson signed it.

In remembrance, the Trenton Columbus Statue Restoration Committee invites you to a commemorative Flag-Raising ceremony on Monday, 14 October 2024, Columbus Day, in Veterans Park—North Entrance on Klockner Road, in Hamilton Township.

The event will take place at 11:30 am–12:15 pm. Refreshments and socializing will follow until 1 pm.

Because the four voyages of Christopher Columbus ended thousands of years of isolation between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres and led to the amalgam of peoples from around the planet in dynamic societies we now know as “the New World,” let us this day commemorate our being together, together.
