New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission Celebrates Success at the NJEA Conference, Connecting with Educators Statewide

Atlantic City, NJ – November 2024 The New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission (NJIHC) proudly announces a successful experience at the annual New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Conference, held this year in Atlantic City. As a premier gathering for educators and educational leaders from across the state, the NJEA Conference provided NJIHC with a valuable platform to share resources, establish meaningful connections with educators, and collaborate with other heritage and cultural commissions.

During the conference, the New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission engaged with a wide range of educators eager to explore ways to integrate Italian heritage, culture, and history into their curricula. The Commission shared its robust educational resources, including lesson plans, teaching guides, and classroom activities designed to celebrate and honor Italian heritage. NJIHC representatives engaged in insightful discussions on the importance of cultural representation and diversity in education, underscoring the impact of Italian-American contributions in New Jersey and beyond.

The Commission was also pleased to strengthen relationships with other heritage commissions, particularly the Holocaust Commission, with whom they discussed potential collaborative initiatives. Both organizations share a commitment to fostering greater understanding of diverse histories and preserving heritage through education. Through this exchange, NJIHC aims to broaden its outreach and develop resources that offer educators and students a more inclusive view of the diverse cultural tapestries that shape our state.

“The NJEA Conference was an outstanding opportunity for us to connect directly with educators and fellow advocates in the education community,” said Margaret Fontana, Executive Director of the New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission. “We were inspired by the enthusiasm of educators who share our vision of integrating Italian heritage into New Jersey classrooms.”

This successful presence at the NJEA Conference marks an important step for NJIHC in its mission to enhance educational access to Italian heritage, empowering students to appreciate the history and achievements of Italian and Italian-Americans. The Commission remains dedicated to supporting New Jersey’s educators through resources and partnerships, ensuring Italian heritage holds a cherished place in the state’s educational landscape.
