Jersey City – April 3, 2024, The New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission proudly celebrates Commissioner Eileen L. Poiani, Ph.D., for her exceptional achievements and recent recognition with the esteemed Petrean Medal from Saint Peter’s University. Dr. Poiani, a distinguished educator and advocate, serves as the special assistant to the president, professor of mathematics, chair of the sustainability council, and the first female mathematics instructor at Saint Peter’s University.
The Petrean Medal, a symbol of dedication and service to others, honors individuals and groups for their profound influence, commitment to Jesuit education ideals, and the strength and courage demonstrated in leadership roles. Dr. Poiani will become the twenty-sixth recipient of this prestigious award in the university’s history.
This recognition was bestowed on the 152nd anniversary of the original charter of Saint Peter’s, dated April 3, 1872, and presented by Dr. Cornacchia, who honored the university’s rich history by conferring the annual AMDG (Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam) awards to community members exemplifying the core values of the institution and living out the Jesuit mission. Dr. Poiani expressed her gratitude, stating, “To receive the Petrean Medal, only the 26th in the 152 years of Saint Peter’s University, is truly an unparalleled honor.”
The momentous occasion was celebrated by esteemed members of the New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission, including Chairman Robert DiBiase, Cav. Dr. Gilda Rorro Baldassari, Ed.D., Chairwoman Emeritus, and Dame Dr. Mary Rorro. Established in 2002, the Commission is dedicated to promoting and preserving the rich culture, history, and heritage of Italians and Italian Americans.
